Permanent Lip Makeup: Enjoy Chocolate But Don’t Wear It

permanent makeup ink Brown Permanent Lip MakeupChocolate is always in season in one form or another. I can always make a good case for that. Chocolate is one of my joys in life, especially Almond Joys. But Mother Nature seems as though she’s ready to bring another season of hot chocolate to a timely end.

micropigment Today in the Phoenix, Arizona area the temperature is supposed to reach the mid 80′s. As someone who has done permanent makeup professionally since the mid 80′s, I’m bringing up the subject of chocolate as it pertains to your facial features and your overall appearance.

Yesterday, I had a beautiful and vibrant young Latina come in to see me for a complimentary consultation. One of her friends is a client of mine so she was recommended to me for doing her permanent makeup.

Of course I wanted to help this lovely young woman. So I gave her a helping hand by convincing her to “Talk to the hand!” She wanted chocolate colored permanent lip color. I told her I wouldn’t do that to her. She firmly reminded me of being referred to me and wanted to know why I was not helping her. I explained that I was.

What I call chocolate milk lips was a pretty popular look in the ’70s and ’80s. (what we were thinking back then anyway?) Before there were brown lip pencils available in the market, women would actually use an eyebrow pencil to create their desired brown line
on their lips. While it is not a color choice for me, that doesn’t make it wrong as a fashion color. So, the real problem is this:

The color brown does not tattoo very well. It leaves most women who choose this for permanent lip makeup with a permanent look as though they just finished drinking hot chocolate or chocolate milk.

As a permanent makeup artist I can tell you from experience that when you mix browns with tissue color it just doesn’t heal well or end up well. It usually leaves your lips looking cold.

I have built a career and reputation for preserving and enhancing the natural look of women’s facial features. One of the reasons many of the leading plastic surgeons have referred patients to me is because they know I will never lock anyone into a look they will one day regret.

The explanation worked. This lovely young woman agreed to wait on what she thought she wanted. I asked her to take a couple of days and think about what I was suggesting to her. If she still wanted it, I would refer her to another permanent makeup artist. She thanked me for my honesty and for caring enough to take that kind of a stand.

Now while I did celebrate the personal decisions we both made in that situation, I’m not celebrating the end of hot chocolate season just yet since I know I will be cold this weekend as a New York permanent makeup artist.
