DEFINE YOUR ARCHES

Extra definition like Camilla Belle’s will give your face an instant lift, and open up eyes. Find your natural arch by placing a finger above the outer half of your brow and lifting up the skin. “Your arch should be where your brow naturally bends,” says brow expert Tonya Crooks. Fill in your brows with a pencil, then pluck one row of hairs from the bottom, following your natural shape. Brush hairs upward with brow gel or clear mascara to hold and enhance the look.

GO THICKER

Take note of Mary-Kate Olsen’s bold brows. “Thick brows make your face look more youthful and can frame your eyes better,” says Crooks. Thicker arches work best on natural brows, so let all hairs grow in for three to four weeks before having a pro shape them. To fake fuller brows in the meantime, dip an angled brush into a matte shadow in a matching shade, or use a pencil to fill in large gaps. “Be sure to apply in short, light strokes, and follow your current shape for the most natural look,” suggests Kiehl’s grooming expert Soul Lee.

SHIFT YOUR SHADE

Made a major hair-color change like Drew Barrymore? Consider altering your brow hue with a tinted brow gel-it’ll coat each hair and “look more natural than powder or pencil, which can sit on skin,” says Lee. If you’re after a longer-lasting hue, think twice before experimenting at home. It can be risky to use permanent dye so close to your eyes, and it’s tricky to get the color just right.

Get A Mini Makeover And We'll Guess Your Everyday Style

About ture microblading training

Today we are chatting allll about microblading. Is it worth it? How much does it cost? Does it hurt? In all honesty I wasn’t planning on doing a full blog post about it so I’m sorry that the pictures are mostly random selfies I found on my phone. I’ve been asked by so many of you though to dish all the details so I thought it’d be easier to just come here and share my experience.

The good the bad and the ugly!!

What is Microblading? It’s basically a tattoo for your eyebrows. While it falls under the permanent makeup category it’s much less invasive than getting an actual tattoo and it’s only semi-permanent. It can last anywhere from 1-3 years depending on various factors.

Who was your artist? Her name is Kristi Christensen (@kristi.christensen) and she’s literally the best in the biz. I’m just gonna full on brag about her for a split second — she has people fly in to get their brows micro-bladed from all over the country and she actually teaches other professional microbladers. Not newbie microbladers but professional microbladers. She’s amazing. I dare say the best. When you’re trusting someone with your FACE, you get the best! Plus she’s hilarious and has the cutest southern accent you’ve ever heard. So she comes highly recommended from me.

If you can’t go to Kristi, just make sure you do your research. I had picked out two different microbladers at one point before I found Kristi and I loved most of their work. Most of it. I loved certain brows but I was just so nervous committing to them because I felt like I needed to tell them the shape I wanted… like I couldn’t trust their opinion because I didn’t want them to give me those brows they gave that person or whatever. Does that make sense? When I was looking through Kristi’s instagram feed it was literally every. single. brow was amazing. She had this gift to transform peoples shapes and I loved that she was an artist first. I feel like it’s important to have some sort of creative talent to start with. So do your homework. You want to be full on obsessed with your artist and their work before committing to them. Shop around! Make sure they have experience and that they are licensed. You also want to see how their clients brows are holding up. I have a lot of friends who after a few months have brows that have totally greyed out, they’ve lost their strokes or the color has faded. Ask lots of questions before committing to your artist.

Did it hurt? LIKE HELL. And I never swear so that’s a big deal ha ha!!! I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I wasn’t prepared for it. I was told by a friend that she was numbed for the whole thing and that it didn’t hurt at all. But one of the amazing things about Kristi is her color stays brown and amazing, it doesn’t grey out like a lot of other artists color. And it’s because of the techniques she uses and her post op care. She doesn’t numb on the first pass… it has something to do with blood flow? Either way haha she didn’t numb me on that first pass. AND IT HURT!!!! It only took about five-ten minutes though and then she was able to numb me for the second pass so it was fine. Put on your big girl pants, you can do this!!!

How long did it take to heal? So what happens is your artist will cut strokes into your skin with a scary knife like tool haaha and you’re gonna bleed. The strokes will scab and it’ll take up to two weeks for them to fall off and heal. When your strokes turn into scabs your brows are CRAZY dark. This picture below is the day after I got them microbladed and the scabs turned jet black.

If we are being totally honest I hated the shape for a handful of weeks. I thought I had ruined my face. I’ll do a comparison further down but she actually shaved off my tails and lifted my brow arch so that I had more eyelid to play around with. I have very hooded eyes and my brows came super close to my eyes. I knew it, but I was used to seeing myself a certain way and brows can change the way a person looks dramatically!! I felt like I didn’t look like me anymore!!! Obviously I was being ridiculous. More on that soon.

Anyway, it took about 5-6 days before the scabs started falling off… exhibit A

She used a shadowing technique because she’d taken off my entire tail and strokes weren’t going to be enough to make my brows look natural. Because of that, and I’m not a microblader so I’m just assuming here, but the eyebrow turned into one huge scab. About 8 days after I had my brows microbladed the scabs started peeling off. Kinda gross. Don’t plan on any photoshoots or blind dates while this is going on. It’s honestly not that bad, you can easily fill them in. The color lightened immensely, almost too much and I was still on the fence about my brows at this point. Kristi warned me though. She drummed into my head before I left her house that I wouldn’t be thrilled with my brows until the six week touchup. So I was prepared. Thank goodness!!!

They basically turned into this picture below. The strokes disappeared and the color went a grey color. You can see pretty well here where my brows were shaved off! I was filling them in like normal, which was fine, not ideal, but it was fine because at least I had a shape to draw over. And I was hopeful it’d get better at my six week touchup.

So here is a comparison on how she transformed my brow shape. Do you see on the right how my tail angles steeper down? It sits right on my brow bone instead of right on top of it like it does on the left.

And a little bit closer up!! Disclaimer: I filled that selfie in on the left using photoshop. I wanted you guys to have a good side by side to comparison and the scabs were falling off in that picture!

To me the shape was so dramatically different and it took me several weeks to finally see that it was better than my original shape. If I had not trusted Kristi completely and valued her expert opinion, I would have been so nervous. I knew all along though that I loved her work, I’d not seen one brow that I wasn’t obsessed with and I was confident I’d come around to loving the shape she thought was best for me. I LOVE the shape now. I’ve had so much fun playing with my eyeshadow palettes because I can actually fit shadow on my lids! Before I had zero space to work with!

What is post op care like? No showers. No exercising. A lot of microbladers recommend putting creams on the scabs, Kristi recommends using nothing. She also had me put bandaids on the tails at night to protect them because I’m a side sleeper. I’m trying to think if there was anything else? Once the scabs fall off your free to resume you’re regular routine.

Six weeks after my initial appointment I was finally ready for my 6 week touchup. I was so excited because she told me this was where the dream brows were made!

She was totally right. I told her how the strokes had fallen off, that the color went a little bit grey and that I felt like you could see where my natural brows ended. She did her magic, added warmth to the color, made more strokes in the arch area to help blend the natural brow and microbladed brows and refined the shape. “Recovery” was much better with the 6 week touch up and the appointment only lasted an hour. I actually didn’t even notice the scabs this second time around, I kept waiting for them to fall off like they did the first time and they were just unnoticeable. The color was darker but I actually really loved that the second time around! I’ve had them done new for a few weeks and the color hasn’t faded to grey like they did with the first appointment and I’m just in love with them. If things change I will definitely give you an update.

So here are a few comparisons:

Here’s what my brows looked like filled in. See how they go a tiny bit grey? It’s always bothered me and despite using the best products I knew of I couldn’t figure out how to avoid it.

They just look SO much better! I finally have room to play around with eyeshadows!!! It actually took me a couple weeks to adjust how I applied my makeup! I finally have a brow bone to highlight! It’s literally the best. No, the best is waking up with my brows totally done! I can literally get ready in five minutes now, a little bit of HACing, some lipstick and mascara. Done.

I’m wearing Bella on the left, which we just ordered 30 of so email me at twistmeprettylips@gmail.com to pre-order it. It’s gonna go dang fast!!! And then on the right I’m wearing sheer berry which is still out of stock :(. Sorry, back to the brows haha! Do you see the shape difference? And the color? The microbladed brows are so warm and totally symmetrical. The minutes in my day I’d spend trying to get my brows symmetrical guys… you don’t even wanna know!

Was it worth it? Yes. 100x yes. It was annoying to go through the whole scabs falling off process, not being able to workout and shower (I bathed sillies) but it was totally worth it. It’s shaved off a good five minutes of my routine every morning, which is a big deal considering I only have a few minutes to get ready as it is! I don’t look like I’m dead when I wake up, swimming this summer will be amazing and just over all I’ve really enjoyed my new shape!!

How much does it cost? It’s a two hour appointment and Kristi charges $399 – $499 if you need a microblading + shading combo. And then the touch-up is an hour long appointment and it’s $150. So it’s definitely not cheap. But the things people will do to have the perfect brows!!

If you have any other questions, if I missed something please ask me in the comments below!! Have you had your brows microbladed? Did you have a different experience? I’d love to open up the comments below for people to go through and read different peoples experiences, so please comment and share!!!

Makeup beauty Microblading Experience: Wow, eyeBrows!

tattoo equipment, permanent makeup tools, permanent makeup machine, auto derma MTS device, digital power-control device ,cartridge needles ,micropigments , manual tattoo pen, microblading tools ,full line high quality microblades and accessories for PMU and Microblading.

Okay, today we’re getting down to business. BROW BUSINESS, that is! As a beauty journalist and blogger, I always strive to be ahead of the curve – be it with products or new treatments. Which is why, when I read about microblading for the first time, I was all…

…OH NOOO. I’M GONNA HAVE TO TRY IT!

I’m sure you’ve heard of the newest, semi-permanent way to create perfectly shaped, filled-in brows, am I right? And if you’re sitting there thinking «ummm… that still sounds kind of permanent, Steffi… even without the semi thrown in», you’re right.

Since microblading involves scalpels, ink and a million tiny cuts on your face, the very first thing I did was… research the hell out of microblading in Switzerland. And was quite thrilled to find that one of the estheticians I’ve reviewed in the past, Olga Medved of Beautybox in Zurich, is specialized in microblading.

So I called her up, talked her ear off for a good twenty minutes about her experience with semi-permanent brow etching, reviewed a ton of before and after images of her work… and set a date for my own microblading treatment.

AND YOU GET TO COME ALONG!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MICROBLADING:

  • This semi-permanent brow enhancing method was created by a serbian make-up artist by the name of Branko Babic. His method seems to be one that’s quite well-established in Europe.

  • His method is based on an exact measurement of your natural brows, and then finding the golden ratio «perfect fit» for your face. The technique also features a hyper-realistic way to draw in individual brow hairs for an «extremely natural» result.

  • PhiBrows (and most other microblading techniques) are created using a tiny scalpel with multiple blades, which are then dipped into pigment before making the individual, tiny cuts into the eyebrows.

  • The pigment isn’t applied as deep into the skin as with a conventional tattoo, so this method is deemed semi-permanent. Meaning: It should last around two years, depending on skin type and how it was applied.

No matter who does the microblading, your treatment should include a follow-up appointment to correct and intensify your brows, about 4 weeks after the first one. So make sure your microblader mentions this during your consultation, okay?

At Beauty , where I’m about to get mine done, the first treatment costs roughly 490 Swiss Francs (about $450), the touch-up clocks in at another 90 to 100 Swiss Francs.

Here are my eyebrows, completely au naturel and without any make-up or pencil:

And now, we’re ready to get started!

The first microblading session will probably take around 1.5 to 2 hours. If anyone tells you it will take less time, PLEASE keep shopping around for an esthetician who will really take the time to find the perfect shape, okay?

Olga first measured my brows out and drew in the shape she’d go for. As she’s previously shaped and plucked my eyebrows, I trusted her… but still was thinking «Whoa, they’re pretty BIG, aren’t they?».

I got up and walked around with my sketched-in brows, and after looking at them in the mirror, was happy with the shape and told Olga we could get started!

With the PhiBrows method, the pigment itself contains a topical pain killer. Since I’m pretty tough (I gave birth to two babies without drugs, I can probably handle this, right?), I declined a separate application of numbing cream…

My brows took almost an hour to create, and I’m not gonna lie: The pain DID intensify towards the end, but it wasn’t that bad all in all.

Here’s what my brows looked like, immediately after treatment and with a thick layer of Vaseline on them to keep germs out…

…and here’s what I REALLY felt like, upon leaving the spa:

Evil circus director, anyone? You can imagine that it wasn’t ALL fun, walking around with my reddend, raw-feeling brows, right?

Olga assured me that most of the reddish color is due to the layer of pigment that is lying ON the skin, and will come off once the healing process starts.

Here are my brows, 24 hours post microblading:

You can already see the individual «hairs», but I’m still pretty freaked out by the intense color!

It took about a week’s healing time for my brows to scab slightly. The color decreased in intensity, too – which was quite a relief.

After four weeks, it was time for my second touch-up session. I was happy with the result so far, and so was Olga. My left brow was slightly less pigmented than the right one, so most of her touch-up happened there.

Here’s my microblading result pre-touch-up:

The second microblading treatment only lasted about 30 minutes, but I’ll admit I was kind of surprised at how often Olga went over them again.

And (here comes the bad news)… the touch-up HURT LIKE HELL. It could be because I was PMSing, but it was pretty painful, and my eyes teared up the entire time. Olga felt bad and asked if I wanted numbing cream, but I powered through.

Once again, post-touch-up, I had really intense, shiny brows for at least a week. Since you’ll be applying vaseline to them for about five days, you need to KNOW this.

And invest in a pair of oversized sunglasses.

But the final result is worth a couple of weeks of questionable brows, in my opinion!

These images are 4 weeks after my touch up, and 8 weeks after my first microblading treatment.

I’m adding this before and after picture in an even larger size, so you can zoom in and see for yourself:

It’s now been almost three months since I did my brows, and here are my thoughts on this relatively new treatment!

PROS:

  • I love the shape, and it’s a total no-brainer plucking them myself now.

  • I don’t need ANY brow make-up anymore: They are literally naked now, and I’m hoping they’ll stay this pigmented for at least a year or two.

  • Even without any other make-up, I still look «done», and my defined brows give my whole face more contrast… which is important, with my pale skin and even paler blonde hair!

CONS:

  • I underestimated how icky I felt during the «post-treatment»-weeks: You need to know that your brows will be slightly swollen and tender and REALLY intensely pigmented for at least 5 to 7 days… TWICE in all. I kept explaining to everyone and their cat that my brows weren’t «on purpose».

  • If you’re sensitive to pain, this isn’t going to be an easy run for you.

  • Up close, there are two tiny bits of my pigmented brows where the color seems to have pooled and blurred a bit. It’s no biggie, those spots just look as if I had applied brow pencil or powder, and you need to get REALLY close to see them… but it bugs me a bit, and isn’t the «individual hairs»-finish I had been expecting.

THE HEY PRETTY CONCLUSION:

I’ll admit I was nervous to try microblading, but I’m glad that I did the research to find someone I trust with my eyebrows… and I’m very happy with the results.

I would definitely do this again, and am currently just hoping that my brows will eventually fade in an okay manner, and that the color won’t change. Olga, my esthetician on them, has almost three years of experience in microblading and hasn’t had any «negative» fade-out, so I’m hoping for the best.

My last tips, if you’re considering getting your brows microbladed?

DO THE RESEARCH, find someone who has lots of before and after pictures and, once you’re there, make sure that they’re working in a clean environment with sterile tools. Don’t skimp on the touch-up treatment, either (and neither should your esthetician).

Of course, avoid any too-good-to-be-true coupon offers on something like this, and – ideally – go to someone you have a personal referral for. And I’m closing this feature with a shitload of disclaimers, darling: This is my own, personal experience with Beautybox in Zurich, Switzerland. And it may differ from yours, and I can’t claim any responsibility for other estheticians!

I hope this blog post helped shed some light on microblading, and hope you’ll be back on Hey Pretty soon for more beauty news.

Ta-taaaa… with my BITCHIN’ brows!

Everything You Need to Know About Microblading Your Eyebrows

It doesn’t matter if you like them arched and feathered or straight and bold, eyebrows are arguably the most important facial feature. If you’re not satisfied with the ones you have, there are so many ways to update them, including brow gel, pencils, and even tattooing. But now there’s a very natural option that delivers semi-permanent results. Ladies, we’d like to introduce you to microblading. Unlike the sometimes Sharpie-esque effects of permanent makeup, microblading is more of an embroidery of trompe l’œil strokes that look just like real hairs.

Nadia Afanaseva, microblading expert and trainer at Eye Design New York gave us the 411 on the unique service, and after our talk there’s no surprise why so many women love it. “Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over plucked brows,” she explained. The professional lash and eyebrow expert also revealed that those who just want to add a slight arch are also great candidates, and the results are a natural, undetectable fringe.

If you’re still not sure how the technique differs from tattooing, Afanaseva explained that “during the microblading process we use a special microblading pen to draw on individual strokes one by one.” It’s an extremely meticulous process that takes around two hours to complete. Since the results will last for up to three years before beginning to fade it’s good to know that the technicians pay so much attention to detail. “The first hour we’re drawing the shape in with removable pencil. That’s the longest part and the most important step. During this time, the best customized shape for every client is chosen.” The pro advises clients to be cautious of places that claim to complete the process in one hour. “It’s not a rushed procedure, it cannot be done in an hour.”

Before the microblading begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area to minimize discomfort, followed by a liquid anesthetic. If you’re worried that the process is painful, Afanaseva assures, “some clients may feel a slight discomfort, but it’s relatively painless.”

When you’ve tried every pencil, powder, pigment, gel, and stencil at Sephora and your brows are still sparse, microblading—a more permanent solution to thin brows—is the last-ditch-effort treatment that promises to change your brow life. The face tattoo technique isn’t as scary as it sounds. Here, we talked to New York City microblading guru Piret Aava, aka The Eyebrow Doctor, to find out everything you need to know about the treatment that beauty insiders (from Olivia Palermo to JR Smith) are already obsessed with.

Microblading is a form of tattooing

Unlike a regular tattoo, “microblading is a form of tattoo artistry where pigment is implanted under your skin with a manual handheld tool instead of a machine,” Aava explains. “I draw hair-like strokes with the tool to mimic natural hairs in your brows. Even though it’s not as deep as the regular tattoo, it’s still a tattoo because pigment is implanted under the skin.”

You need to prepare

If you drink a lot, take aspirin, or use retinol, stop one week before your treatment. “Retinol makes your skin thin and then you bleed a little more,” Aava says. “Avoid blood thinners, aspirin, and alcohol.”

It doesn’t hurt (too much)

Pain is relative. “Some feel more than others. Overall it feels like little scratches. You feel it, but it’s not unbearable. It’s not like having a baby,” says Aava, who preps her patients’ brows with topical numbing cream and tops up throughout the process to dull the discomfort.

Microblading takes time

“I don’t like to rush anyone,” says Aava, who blocks off two hours for new clients.

Aftercare is essential

That means protecting freshly bladed brows from all moisture–no sweaty workouts or washing your face with water. Some patients experience itching and redness during the first week, which Vaseline can alleviate. Brows will look slightly darker at first, but the color will fade 30 to 40 percent. Aftercare ointments are provided during your first appointment. “Overall they look great right away and you don’t have to hide,” Aava says. “Slight redness and mild swelling is normal.”

Results last up to three years

Depending on the skin and lifestyle, Aava’s clients come back for touch-ups once every six months.

Microblading is an investment

The first treatment can cost up to $900. While lower-priced services are available, Aava cautions against visiting inexperienced technicians. Remember, microblading is a form of tattooing.
